Crochet Your Hats Out!

In this 3 part class, you will learn to not only master this new design but learn to expand this design to  make your own unique hats. This hat pattern is ideal for using your handspun odds and ends. You can use commerical yarns, handspun or a combination.  You can use fine yarns or heavy yarns or combine them. Yarn types will be discussed and examples shown.  

Begginers welcome but you do need to know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet. Get a preclass lesson from Nancy if you need it.

Date & Time:  January 9, 2010. 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. One hour lunch break.

Materials to bring: Scissors, Crochet Hooks, sizes H, I, J, K; Note pad and Pencil.  Optional: Interesting handspun yarns.

Materials Provided: Exciting Crochet Yarns, enough to complete a hat. Hat and fingerless mitt pattern.


Beginning Spinning

Instructor: Nancy Boerman

Cost: $35/hour  + Materials

Description:  You saw people spinning at the fair and you are interested in learning how to do "it".  Or maybe you just purchased a spinning wheel and don't know how to get started.  Whether you are using a spinning wheel or a drop spindle, Nancy will help you through the basics of hand spinning.

Materials to Bring: An open mind and wheel or spindle if you have one.

Materials Provided:  Wheels for rent or purchase.  Spindles, tools and fiber available for purchase.

Spinning With Beads

Beads and bobbles add interest to your yarn.  In this class we will learn not only the basic methods of core spinning over a thread with beads on it and plying with a thread with beads on it but also spinning beads and bobbles directly into the singles.  We will practice those techinques and a few more.  We will discuss what wheels to use, use of spindles and point wheels for bead spinning as well as how to force the beads onto the bobbin when they tend to catch.

Material to Bring: Wheel, carders, Spindle (supported or drop), Lazy Kate and three(3) bobbins. Optional: your own beads ball winder.

Refining Your Begging Spinning Skills

Class size LIMITED

Description: Have you just moved from a spindle to a spinning wheel?  Are you having trouble making a balanced 2-ply?  Are you spinning very fine and cannot seem to get the grist you want in your yarn?  Are your yarns over twisted?  This class is for you.  Gwen will work individually with you and as a group to refine your spinning.

Eco-Fibers with Gwen Powell

Speed Spinning with Gwen Powell

Need a fast project? Learn to spin stable singles of wool blend rovings/sliver at high speeds for knitting, weaving and crochet. This method is based on techniques from Judith Mackenzie McCuin.

COST- $65.00
materials included--you pick 4 ounces of any Crosspatch Creations Color Blend.

Equipment to bring: Spinning Wheel or spindle, niddy-noddy, hand cards (any type), note pad and pencil; any fibers you might want to Speed Spin; Angelina or other decorative fibers. All of this will be available at class time.

Spinning Silk with a Different Twist

Join Gwen Powell for a silk adventure.  On the second day of class we will culminate our study with the largest expanded form of the cocoon you have every seen!

Students will learn to reel silk from dyed cocoons directly to their wheel or spindle, make colored silk mawata--you don't need special equipment, different methods of dyeing silk mawata (discussion only), using unspun silk mawata and a few techniques of spinning silk mawata or other forms of the expanded cocoon. Of course their will be some of Gwen's surprises too!  Most of the techniques Gwen uses were not introduced by Celia Quinn. This is an updated workshop that Gwen gave the Guild over 20 years ago. It was a ton of fun way back when.

Price:  $60 including enough silk to make a lacy lightweight scarf.  Now taking advance reservations for this 2-part class.

Students will bring a wheel or supported spindles, notepads, tags for their samples, a 2 quart 4 inch deep metal pot that will hold hot water.

Spinning Designer Yarn

at Custom Handweaving

 Held April 18, 2007 this class was a success with 13 students!

Learn to spin 5 types of designer yarns with techniques that will lead you to unlimited possibilites. Learn to use your yarns together to create colorways that work well together.  Use fibers together that have properties to enhance your yarns.

This workshop is a precursor of exciting things to come! Get a preview.

Limit 10 students.  Cost: $70.  Cost includes all materials for a small project such as substancial scarf, a hat and mittens or a size 10 vest. 

Additional fiber will be available at a discount during the class.
